Assisi
Assisi is the quintessentially perfect Italian hill town. It is so perfect, in fact, that millions upon millions of the visitors who come here agree, turning it in the most crowded spot in Umbria. But it’s still well worth a visit, as the history, architecture and art are some of Umbria’s best.
Since Roman times, its inhabitants have been aware of the visual impact of their city, perched halfway up Monte Subasio (1290). From the valley, its pink and white marble buildings shimmer in the sunlight.
There is perhaps no other place on earth that is as tied to its famous son as Assisi is with saint Francis, who was born here in 1182. He renounced his father’s wealth in his late teens to pursue a live of chastity and poverty. After his renunciation of worldly goods he began founding the order of mendicant friars known as the Frati Minori ( Order of Minors; they became known as the Franciscans after St.Francis’ death), which attracted a huge following in Europe. With one of his disciples, St.Clara (Santa Chiara), he co-founded the Franciscans’ female Ordine delle Clarisse. St.Francis became the patron saint of Italy in 1939. The Basilica di San Francesca is Assisi’s main draw.
