Set into the side of a hill covered with olive groves, Cortona offers stunning views across the Tuscan countryside and has changed little since the Middle Ages. It was a small settlement when the Etruscans moved in during the 8th century BC and it later became a Roman town. In the late 14th century, it attracted the likes of Fra Angelico, who lived and worked in the city for about 10 years. The city is small, easily seen in a few hours, and well worth visiting for the sensational view alone; on clear days you can see as far as Lago di Trasimeno in Umbria.
