Gubbio

Hitched onto the steep slopes of Monte Ingino and overlooking a picturesque valley, the centuries-old Palazzi  of Gubbio exude a warm ochre glow in the late afternoon sunlight. You don’t need much imagination to feel that you have stepped back into the Middle Ages, while meandering along the town’s quiet, treeless lanes and peering into some of the city’s many fine ceramic shops.

In 295 BC Gubbio was the site of an important battle, where the Romans fought the Umbri, Etruscans and Gauls. Because Gubbio didn’t participate, Rome elevated its status and the town became Romanised. In the 14th century it fell into the hands of the Montefeltro family of Urbino and was later reincorporated into the Papal States in the late 1500s. It didn’t gain its independence until 1831, and quickly saw Italian unification in the 1860s.

Gubbio has one of the most famous festivals of Italy, on May 15: Corsa dei Ceri “Candles Race”.
