Lago di Trasimeno
Lago di Trasimeno’s main draw is its plethora of outdoors activities and natural beauty, but it offers an equal amount of cultural and architectural history as well.
The Lago is the 4th biggest lake in Italy. During spring, flowers blanket the area. Sunflowers are grown for their oil, which is used for frying because it’s less expensive than olive oil.
Historically, the area bounced back and forth between various factions, but it is now perfectly situated, literally at the crossroads of Tuscany and Umbria.
The communities that surround Lago di Trasimeno have banded together with various governmental organizations to bring to live a sustainable plan for maintaining the ecological purity of the area. Many of the lake’s activities involve environmentally friendly water sports, such as kayaking or windsurfing.
Isola Maggiore, is the Lake’s main inhabited island and was reputedly a favorite with St.Francis. The island is famed for its lace and embroidery production and you can see examples in the Museo del Merlotti.
