Perugia
One of Italy’s best –preserved medieval hill towns, Perugia is also a hip student town, with a never-ending stream of cultural events, restaurants to try and concerts to attend.
Perugia has a lively and bloody past. The Umbrii tribe inhabited the surrounding area and controlled land stretching from presentday Tuscany into le Marcher, but it was the Etruscans who founded the city, which reached its zenith in the 6th century BC. It fell to the Romans in 310 BC and was given the name Perusia.
In 1538 the city was incorporated into the Papal States under Pope Paul III, remaining under papal control for almost 3 centuries.
Perugia has a strong artistic and cultural tradition. In the 15th century it was home to fresco painters Bernardino Pinturicchio and his master Pietro Vanucci (known as Perugino), who was to teach Raphael.
Today, the Universita per Stranieri , established in 1925, offers courses in Italian and attracts thousands of students from all over the world. Every year at the end of July the famous Umbria Jazz takes place, indoors and outdoors people can enjoy the acts of top-musicians.
